Lopez is known as the 'friendly isle' among the San Juans. You'll find a genuine sense of warmth and lots of hand waving as you travel along the roads--don't forget to wave back!
The island is the first stop on the Washington Ferry from Anacortes, a pleasant 45 minute ride from the mainland. Approximately 15 miles long and eight miles wide, Lopez is home to about 2,200 residents. Despite its small size, you'll find a mix of farmland, forest, coastline and state parks, with many recreational opportunities. You can take a long hike, a bike ride among the rolling hills, visit the local winery, or simply find a quiet spot to read a book. Bicycle rentals are available in town (a short walk) and at the marina about two miles from the house.
The San Juans are renown as a kayak heaven--you can find yourself in the midst of curious seals or even orcas while bald eagles fly overhead. There are several great tour companies on the island (see our links.) You can take a lesson, rent a kayak or join a small group for a three hour tour.
Even though our kitchen is spacious, if you don't feel like cooking while on vacation, you can walk down to several restaurants and some of the yummiest cooking in the Northwest! Love Dog Cafe offers down home cookin', huge servings, vegetarian selections and tasty salads (their salad dressing is available for sale--don't pass it up!) Vita's Wildly Delicious offers gourmet food and wine to go. We love bringing it up to the deck and enjoying the sunset. Vortex has a great selection of fresh juices (fruit and vegetable--choose your own combo), burritos, wraps, salads, soups, etc. They use local, organic produce whenever possible.
La Boheme offers delicious espresso drinks and teas in a wonderfully appointed shop with the latest issue of the New York Times. Holly B's Bakery is often my first stop in the mornings for a breakfast treat (closed during winter.) For a special occasion, make reservations at The Bay Cafe, one of the finest restaurants in the Northwest. Just save room for dessert! Links to most of these retaurants can be found on the chamber of commerce website for Lopez Island.
If you visit between May and September, you won't want to miss the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings, just down the hill from Sunset View House. You may find local produce and meat, handmade soaps, jewelry and assorted arts and crafts.
